An Introduction to Wiccan Spirituality
Our wonderful world is made up of a myriad different peoples and beliefs. But one thing many people have in common is an inner sense of connection with something - a part of themselves, something larger - that feels "Divine" or "other-worldly." This connection, and the practices that strengthen it are known as Spirituality. Many Spiritual practices exist today, both religious and secular, but one of the most popular and fast-growing is known as Wicca.
"Wicca" (or "Traditional Wicca" as it is somtimes called,) is the term originally used by those of the Gardnerian "downline" (those who were initiated by Gerald Gardner or his successors) to describe their lineage, including Alexandrian and others, to describe their path so that those who meet each other will understand their similar basic training and similar beliefs ascribed by their fellow Wiccans. Some Traditionalists are very particular about the use of this word. To them, it separates those who are specificlly trained in person, and in a specific manner, from those who learned from books or on-line without benefit of a teacher in person. Not all Traditionalists are as particular however, and many use thise term even if they are not from these lineages. It is Polytheistic because it recognizes each God and Goddess as separate, each with it's own rich heritage, culture, and divine essence. It is common in Traditional Wiccan practice to hear people referring to their perception of the Divine as "The God and Goddess" or "The Lord and Lady" because Traditional Wiccans feel very protective of their Gods and consider their connection with their Gods very personal.
"Modern" Wicca, (or Neo-Wicca as it is sometimes called) is a spiritual practice that emphasizes universal and personal balance, introspection, awareness of one's environment, self-responsibility, social justice, and a rich appreciation of and connection to Nature. It is also Polytheistic, which means that it allows freedom in the individuals perception of the Universal forces, polarities, and nuances, however it tends to think of the divine essence as "all one." Because of this, it is also common in Neo-Wiccan practice to hear people referring to their perception of the Divine as "The God and Goddess" or "The Lord and Lady" and think of them as rather Universal Archeatypes.
Both types of Wiccans generally tend towards a balance of both male and female, rather than subjugate one to the other. Because of this, Wicca is a comfortable and suitable spiritual practice for both men and women.Because there are so many different types and paths to the Craft, it is always advised to get to know the people you will be working with. Like an extended family, these will be people you have to trust with your (spiritual) life! It is important thatTHEY feel as confortable with YOU as YOU feel with them, so don't be offended if for some reason you're not invited to join them - it just wasn't ment to be. You should give thanks for the experaince you gained, and be excited and ready for where your next adventure is!!
